Ravensbourne

Following their relocation from Chislehurst to the Greenwich Peninsula, Ravensbourne – formerly 'Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication' is a university sector college offering a portfolio of courses spanning environmental/graphic design, animation, moving image, music production for media and sound design; a centre of excellence, industry accredited and a Skillset Media Academy. In 2011 the new building received a prestigious RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) award, from a shortlist of 55 projects.

New Identity
and Wayfinding

The new brand identity, developed by Johnson Banks, was inspired by the building cladding which cloaks the Foreign Office Architects designed building; the abstract pattern influenced by the work of mathematician Roger Penrose. Invited by Johnson Banks to look at Wayfinding, we analysed building user types and their flow routes; this in turn informed where 'decision points' were located within the building. We distilled information and developed a simple zonal numbering system which then informed the sign inventory – basically setting out in simple terms, the essential information required at each point. Johnson Banks then used this to design the wayfinding graphics which were in turn implemented using the methods we prescribed, direct to the walls.

What they said

In my opinion, Ravensbourne's wayfinding system is the most successful aspect of our interior design. Intuitive, bold and visually stunning, it works in perfect harmony with the brand, architecture and envelope of our amazing building.
